WV-MI: How to Practice MI Everyday
Opportunities to Advance Your Motivational Interviewing Practice
You don’t need to be talking to a client to practice MI.
Talking to anyone will do.
Just throw in a few reflections, try for some complexity (reflect something underneath what is being said), maybe try a double-sided reflection, and by all means, try to affirm a quality or a value the person seems to value or something that seems important to them.
At Krogers last night I was headed to the self-check-out and a cashier waved me down to come to her aisle.
Me: ”I’m guessing you like to be busy”
She: “I can’t stand it to just do nothing.”
That’s all there was to it. Just verbalizing a little observation, and hoping it landed.
Visiting a young friend in his office, jazz music is playing from his speakers
Me: “Sounds like you really like music.”
He: “It keeps me going.”
And if you are an introvert, you can practice empathy on Facebook or in an email or text
A friend on Facebook
He: “After 12 years, our family dog has died. She was our daughters best friend.”
Me: “You really loved that dog. She was a part of your family.”
We could call this “Street MI.” Just practice empathy and reflecting whenever you can. And the good news is, you always can!
The MI Snack for this week, July 3, 2024 at 11am (ET):
An MI Video Breakdown
I appreciate all the enthusiasm for our Wednesday MI Snacks. I’m coming to think that we need more examples of good MI conversations, so here we go!
This Wednesday I will be breaking down a classic MI video, going frame by frame with what is happening from my perspective. The case is with a guy who does not really want something from the helper, so it is interesting seeing the conversation move slowly towards a Focus.
